The Greek Society of Pediatric Surgeons, successor to the former "Hellenic Pediatric Surgery Society," was founded in 1975. The Society is based in Athens and serves as the official scientific body for Pediatric Surgery in the country. It also includes associate members, who are pediatric surgery residents, and affiliated members from other related specialties.
The purpose of GAPS is to promote paediatric surgery in Greece and to utilize the work performed by Greek Paediatric Surgeons for the benefit of the social community and the scientific stature of the surgeons themselves.
This goal is achieved through the organization of scientific seminars and symposia held at regular intervals, as well as a biennial congress, which represents the pinnacle of the Society’s scientific events. The congress features the participation of distinguished Pediatric Surgeons from both Greece and abroad. Additionally, doctors from other specialties with shared interests also attend this congress. The Society's presence in cities beyond major urban centers contributes to improving the management of pediatric surgical issues across the country.
It is a member, with elected representatives, of the following international federations:
- European Union of Medical Specialist (UEMS)
- World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS)
while maintaining strong ties with the European Paediatric Surgeons’ Association (EUPSA)
in whose events it participates consistently.
